According to Japanese media reports on July 2, Hironori Kawagoe, the new president of Toshiba Group, announced that the company plans to increase its production in fiscal year 2025 to nearly double that of fiscal year 2021. Focusing on growing demand for semiconductors, the company will increase production equipment at its Iwate Factory (Kitagami) and Oita Factory (Oita City). Under the plan, the company will use vacant space in manufacturing buildings at the two sites to expand its production facilities for contract production.

In addition, the Iwate Plant will add equipment for linear image sensors for copy machines, which is one of the company's strengths. At the Oita plant, the company began work last year to build a new facility for power semiconductors used in power control and other applications. In addition, the Iwate Factory has added linear image sensors for use in copiers, which is one of the company's strengths.

The Oita plant started construction of new power semiconductors for power control last year. The amount of investment was not disclosed, but Toshiba Group plans to invest 100 billion yen in power semiconductors, part of which will be used to strengthen Oita business.

In September last year, the group announced a policy to exit the advanced system high-density integrated circuit (LSI) business in the semiconductor business and focus on power semiconductors and highly relevant motor control analog integrated circuits, where it is expected to have a stable market.

Hironori Kawagoe said: "Amid the shortage of semiconductors, we can currently only meet 60-70% of customers' requirements, but we hope to improve our quality capabilities, which are key to Japan's manufacturing industry, to ensure stable supply."

The company was established in 2004 through the merger of the businesses of Iwate Toshiba Electronics and Toshiba Oita. The company has 800 employees in its Iwate business unit and 1,300 employees in its Oita business unit and reported sales of 104.9 billion yen in the fiscal year ended March 2020.
