Integrated circuits, known as the "heart" of electronic products, are the core of all information technology industries. At present, my country's integrated circuit industry continues to maintain rapid growth, its technological innovation capabilities continue to improve, and its industrial development support capabilities have significantly improved. However, problems such as the overall technical level is not high, the core product innovation capabilities are not strong, and the overall products are still at the mid-to-low end.

 
At the beginning of this year, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education established the first-level discipline of "Integrated Circuit Science and Engineering" in order to provide strong talent support to fundamentally solve the "stuck neck" problem that restricts the development of my country's integrated circuit industry.

Since the establishment of the semiconductor major in 1956, Tsinghua University has trained more than 4,000 undergraduate students, more than 3,000 master students, and more than 500 doctoral students in the field of integrated circuits. From 2016 to 2020, more than 70% of graduates entered the integrated circuit industry and scientific research front lines. In 2020, Tsinghua University agreed to independently review and add doctoral and master's degree authorization points for the first-level discipline of integrated circuit science and engineering.

The School of Integrated Circuits of Tsinghua University established today will aim at the "stuck" problem of integrated circuits, focus on the frontiers of integrated circuit disciplines, break down disciplinary barriers, strengthen cross-integration, break through key core technologies, cultivate talents urgently needed by the country, achieve international leadership in integrated circuit disciplines, and support the independent innovation and development of my country's integrated circuit industry.

The reporter learned that the School of Integrated Circuits will be co-founded by the former Department of Microelectronics and Nanoelectronics and the Department of Electronic Engineering. It will leverage Tsinghua University's multidisciplinary advantages, explore the "1+N" joint mechanism, and establish cross-research centers with relevant departments to achieve talent training and scientific research that fully covers the integrated circuit industry chain.

In terms of the teaching staff, a high-level teaching and research teaching team will be established through flexible and pragmatic employment mechanisms such as part-time employment and dual employment. At the same time, the college will conduct comprehensive industry-education integration with leading enterprises in various fields of the industrial chain, and carry out high-level talent training and high-level scientific research in response to the industry's most advanced technologies and most urgent needs.

In terms of talent training, the School of Integrated Circuits will recruit students at different levels and categories, including undergraduate students, professional master's students, academic doctoral students, and specialized doctoral students. Undergraduate training will adopt broad-based training and academy training models, while the training of master's and doctoral students will focus on high-level innovative talents.
