As long as domestic technology companies abandon their original "businessman" thinking and are willing to spend time and energy on independent innovation, the technological blockade in European and American countries will be broken. After entering the era of digitalization, China has been "squeezed" by European and American countries in the fields of communications, chips, etc., and this disadvantage has been restored by Huawei's own efforts. China currently has an absolute leading advantage in 5G technology. Kirin chips are enough to make American companies "scared", and some people's relevant restrictions are also formulated to target these two aspects.

The chip field is “big but not strong”

Although we currently have a certain ability to produce chips, and the overall development of the domestic chip industry is on an upward trend, the upstream industry chain of chips is completely dependent on European and American countries. Take chip R&D and design as an example. Although Huawei has the means to design top-notch 5nm chips, the design process still relies heavily on the British ARM architecture, which is currently the only mobile chip architecture supplier in the world.

As the world's largest chip market, China consumes the most chips every year, but we are highly dependent on imports. The annual import volume exceeds 300 billion US dollars, even exceeding the total import of crude oil. It is precisely because of the lack of core technology that it has created this "strong but not big" situation. With the continuous development of technology, solutions are now coming.

The RISC-V era has arrived

After the arrival of the 5G Internet of Things era, domestic dependence on chips will continue to rise. So is there any way to achieve complete localization of chips? Now there is a direct answer, and the secret lies in the RISC-V architecture.

First of all, let’s take a look at the RISC-V architecture. This technology was first established as a CPU instruction set project by the University of California. In the early stages of the project’s development, the developers were aware of the later promotion issues. In order to avoid RISC-V technology being restricted by the United States, after achieving certain results, they chose to move the foundation to Switzerland, thus ensuring a certain degree of neutrality and achieving the purpose of open source.

The reason why the RISC-V architecture is popular is that it is open source to the greatest extent. Any company or individual can modify, design and re-manufacture it as long as necessary, and the final products can be freely sold. Such projects have also been supported by the world's top scientific research talents, and have achieved very good results so far.

At present, many domestic chip companies have joined this camp. Previously, Pingtou Ge Semiconductor, owned by Alibaba, has developed the Xuantie 910 chip based on the RISC-V architecture, and Huawei has also launched the Hi3861 development board based on this architecture, which will also support the Hongmeng system in the future.

Improvement of RISC-V architecture

The reason why the RISC-V architecture can develop so fast is mainly because of the strong entry of the American technology giant MIPS, which abandoned the original MIPS architecture and devoted itself to the research and development of RISC-V. You must know that the previous MIPS architecture was a chip architecture as famous as ARM and X86, but its market promotion was restricted in the later period due to various reasons.

The addition of strong support means that the era of RISC-V architecture has gradually arrived. Although the ARM architecture is easy to use, it is quite unfriendly to small and medium-sized enterprises. The licensing fee alone is as high as hundreds of millions, which is simply unaffordable for ordinary enterprises. This also brings development opportunities to the RISC-V architecture, and enterprises can achieve a truly free state during use.

Although the RISC-V architecture is available for free, its design is not sloppy at all. It adopts a simpler instruction set and supports modularity. Its performance is also very outstanding and can even meet the application scenarios of supercomputers. With the advent of the Internet of Things era, the fragmentation of equipment will become more and more serious, and the flexibility of the RISC-V architecture can better meet the needs of different scenarios.

The independent "Chinese core" is about to be born!

Although NVIDIA's acquisition of ARM has been jointly opposed by many countries, NVIDIA has never given up the acquisition and cannot pin all its hopes on others.
