How much does each wafer cost?
2022-03-17 207
Do you know how much money you can make from selling a chip? According to the latest data released by market research organization IC Insights, driven by strong demand for the 7nm process and mass production of the 5nm process,In 2020, TSMC’s revenue per wafer reached US$1,634 (approximately RMB 10,568).Single chip revenue ranks first in the global semiconductor industry, setting a record high! In comparison,Global Foundries’ average price per wafer is only US$984.TSMC is 66% higher than that. As for competitors such as UMC and SMIC that lack cutting-edge processes below 14nm, TSMC’s leading advantage is even more obvious.

IC Insights states,UMC’s price per wafer is only US$675, and SMIC’s price per wafer is only US$684.Both accounted for less than half of TSMC’s revenue per wafer during the same period. It is understood that TSMC is the only pure wafer foundry in the world that uses both 7nm and 5nm process nodes to manufacture ICs in 2020. Not coincidentally, their total revenue per wafer increased significantly in 2020 as many of the top fabless IC suppliers - 16 fabless IC companies with more than $1 billion in revenue in 2020 - planned to produce the latest designs using these state-of-the-art processes.

It is worth noting that as the global "core shortage" intensifies, TSMC is advancing its latest production expansion plan.

According to foreign media reports,TSMC is planning to invest more than 230 billion yuan to build six new factories in Arizona, USA.To achieve the goal of building a very large wafer fab. According to previous news disclosures, the new factory will mainly produce 5nm chips, which are currently in the highest demand. Construction will begin in 2021, trial production will be installed in 2023, and construction will be completed in 2024. After being put into production, it can create more than 1,600 high-tech talent jobs and thousands of indirect jobs.

You know, the current global "chip shortage" has spread from the automotive chip industry to the mobile phone chip industry. TSMC's investment and construction of factories in the United States will inevitably affect the global chip industry chain, thus attracting attention from the supply chains of the 27 EU countries, Japan, China and other countries.

In addition, coupled with the continued influx of orders from US technology giants such as Apple, Qualcomm, Intel, AMD, and NVIDIA,If this competitive momentum continues and the world's main chip production is concentrated on TSMC, it may eventually become the Matthew Effect.
