On March 9, IC Insights, a well-known research organization, released its latest forecast report on its official website, re-adjusting its assessment of global semiconductor growth in 2021. The report pointed out that the global semiconductor market is conservatively estimated to grow by 19% this year, and highlighted the global integrated circuit growth trends and growth drivers.

IC Insights expects the global IC market to grow by 2% in the first quarter of 2021 and the fourth quarter of 2020. If this prediction is basically accurate, this will be the first time in 10 years that the global integrated circuit market has achieved continuous growth year-on-year.

If total semiconductor sales increase by 2% in the first quarter of 2021 and the fourth quarter of 2020 to US$113.1 billion, and remain flat from the second quarter of this year to the fourth quarter of this year, the global IC market for the whole of 2021 will grow by about 12%. This number is the same as the 2021 forecast originally proposed by IC Insights’ MacLean Report, as shown below:

However, if IC Insights' modest quarterly forecasts of 3% growth in the second quarter, 8% growth in the third quarter and 0% growth in the fourth quarter are taken into account, the global IC market will show 19% growth this year. IC Insights believes that the global IC market forecast in 2021 is relatively conservative. Market growth of 19% this year is expected to be driven by a 17% surge in IC unit shipments this year and a 1% increase in IC ASP.

The report pointed out that in 2020, the global pandemic accelerated the digital transformation of the global economy, resulting in increased sales of new electronic systems, especially in the second half of the year, when IC market demand increased significantly.

Furthermore, this demand continues to be fully realized in the first quarter of 2021. Although the Covid-19 situation remains very fluid, many semiconductor companies have issued strong 1Q21 guidance and expect continued healthy demand throughout the year. The growth in demand has extended into the first quarter of this year.
