Founded in 2005, GigaDevice is a chip design company focusing on memory technology and IC solutions. GigaDevice Innovation continues to expand its product lines and has now formed three series of business matrices. They are flash memory chips, microcontrollers (Micro ControlUnit, MCU for short), intelligent human-computer interaction sensor chips and overall solutions., relying on the three major businesses to form a three-business division structure with storage + MCU + sensor as the core.
The great cause of storage has a long and difficult road ahead, but we can continue to do so and we can look forward to the future.
NOR Flash has the characteristics of random storage, strong reliability, fast reading speed, and executable code. It is mainly used to store codes and some data. It has performance and cost advantages in low- and medium-capacity applications. It is mainly used in mobile phones, PCs, set-top boxes, Internet of Things equipment and other fields. In recent years, with the growth of demand in downstream markets such as TWS headsets, ADAS, 5G base stations, AMOLED, TDDI, etc., the NOR Flash market has developed steadily. According to data from the consulting agency CINNO, in 2017 NOR Flash The Flash market size is approximately US$2.41 billion, and the market is expected to grow to US$3.72 billion in 2022.
GigaDevice currently ranks third in the NOR Flash market, and its product manufacturing process is moving to the 55nm platform. The process upgrade has brought about reduced product power consumption, improved performance, and smaller package size, helping the company maintain its leading position in the industry. The company's first self-branded DRAM product (19nm process, 4Gb) was officially launched on June 3, achieving national production from design, tape-out, packaging, testing, and verification. The company's downstream DRAM products have a high degree of overlap with the current customer base, allowing the company to have high synergy in all customer channels and technical support and other resources.
In addition, the cooperative relationship with Hefei Changxin also enables the company to have sustainable and stable supply capabilities, which can better meet downstream needs. The investment in DRAM products is expected to further improve the company's memory product line and open up a broad market space.
MCU has vast space, GigaDevice innovates multi-faceted layout
In 2020, due to the weakening of the global electronics supply chain and slowdown in automobile sales due to the epidemic, the overall MCU market size will decrease by 8% to US$14.9 billion. However, as the epidemic situation improves and the downstream market recovers rapidly, the global MCU market gradually returns to steady growth. According to data from the consulting agency IC Insights, the overall scale is expected to reach US$18.8 billion in 2023.
Focusing on the Chinese market, according to IHS statistics, the average annual compound growth rate (CAGR) of China's MCU market in the past five years has been 7.2%, which is four times the growth rate of the global MCU market in the same period. In 2019, the size of China's MCU market reached 25.6 billion yuan.
The entire MCU application includes automotive, industrial and consumer applications. There are different products for different markets. The company's GD32 is a mainstream product in China's 32-bit general-purpose MCU field. It has more than 360 products in 28 series for the market to choose from. The product coverage rate is firmly at the forefront of the market and is widely used in industrial and consumer embedded markets.
The company's MCU business revenue in 2020 was 750 million yuan, a year-on-year increase of 70.1%, and sales were growing rapidly. According to data disclosed in the company's annual report, MCU sales in 2020 were approximately 190 million units, a year-on-year increase of nearly 76%. According to the IHS Markit report, in China's Arm CortexM MCU market, the company ranked third in sales in 2018, with a market share of 9.4%. The company has always maintained technological innovation and market advancement in the field of general-purpose MCUs. Currently, the process nodes of mainstream MCU companies are concentrated in 180nm~40nm. GigaDevice’s MCU products’ newly developed products in 2020 are all on the 40nm process platform, which is at the leading level in the industry.
At the same time, the company is actively exploring the ultra-low power consumption market, the automotive MCU market such as traditional body control, high-performance industrial control, multimedia control and other markets, and has launched supporting PMIC and MOSFET DRIVER products around the MCU.
