Annual Chip Design Technology Innovation Award Trophy
The organizers of the conference pointed out when awarding the award: Professor Wei Shaojun and his team have been engaged in reconfigurable chip technology research since 2008. They have proposed software-defined chip technology and theory, innovated chip architecture and design paradigms, and allowed chip functions to dynamically change with changes in software. They have overcome the worldwide problem of chips having both high flexibility and high energy efficiency, and are at the forefront of the world in this field. Therefore, this year's "Annual Chip Design Technology Innovation Award" will be awarded to Professor Wei Shaojun in recognition of his "leading software-defined chip design technology."
Different from the design method of traditional digital chips using basic logic gates, software-defined chips construct characteristic computing components (primitive elements) and primitive arrays, dynamically schedule, combine, and allocate the primitives in the array according to task (software) requirements, and reconstruct the interconnections between primitives in real time, thereby realizing the dynamic definition of chip functions by software, making the chip both high energy efficiency (i.e., speed-power consumption ratio) and high flexibility, while also lowering the design threshold of digital chips. The introduction of software-defined chip technology has greatly promoted the changes in digital chip architecture and design paradigms.
After integrated circuit technology enters the nanometer era, integrated circuit chips face huge challenges. Especially with the popularization of 5G and artificial intelligence technology, flexibility and high energy efficiency have become the most important goals pursued by chip design. However, since the physical structure and basic characteristics of a chip are fixed immediately after it is manufactured, designing a chip with both high energy efficiency and high flexibility has become a worldwide problem. Professor Wei Shaojun and his team started from high-level comprehensive theories and methods to construct a new circuit architecture and design paradigm for software-defined chips, which better solved the contradiction between energy efficiency and flexibility. DARPA in the United States also launched related research in the Electronics Revitalization Initiative (ERI) in 2018.
This time, the 2021 IC Leadership Summit held by ASPENCORE awarded the Annual Chip Design Technology Innovation Award to Professor Wei Shaojun, which fully demonstrates the recognition of software-defined chip technology by the international chip community, and also indicates that this technology will have broad development prospects in the future.
