Automotive chips have been a hot topic in the industry recently. Mr. Chen Hong, representative of the National People's Congress and chairman of SAIC Motor, put forward a proposal on automotive chips at the two sessions, which caused major repercussions in the industry. Two media outlets with significant influence on the automobile industry, "Automobile Zongheng" magazine and "China Automobile News" conducted interviews with the author. Now I have compiled the author’s thoughts into several blogs and discussed them with industry experts.

The author's first core point of view is that chips are the shortcomings of all industries. my country's current weak automotive chip design and production capabilities are a result of history and do not need to be blamed on the automotive industry or the chip industry. Of course, this situation needs to change, and the conditions for change are present.

First, chips are the industry with the highest technical barriers and the highest global concentration.The world's chips are designed in a few countries, produced in a few countries and regions, and supplied to the whole world for applications in various industries.China currently relies mainly on imported chips. This is not because the automobile industry or the chip industry has done anything wrong. This situation is formed by history and is determined by the development of the world economy.

second,China automobile industryThe large-scale development occurred after the reform and opening up. The development model of China's automobile industry can be divided into two types: Passenger cars are mainly based on comprehensive technology introduction and gradually localized, thereby forming a relatively complete development and production system; commercial vehicles are mainly based on independent innovation and have also formed a relatively complete development and production system, and the overall level is close to the world's advanced level. but,Whether it is a passenger car or a commercial vehicle, the current shortcomings are key materials, core components and high-end equipment. Automotive chips are the most important components.This is not only true for China's automobile industry, but also for other manufacturing industries. Even the high-speed rail industry, which everyone praises, still relies heavily on imports of key materials, core components and high-end equipment.

Third, the situation that automotive chips are mainly dependent on imports must be changed.At present, the proportion of domestic procurement of automotive chips is about 5~10%, and the remaining 90~95% needs to be imported. There are two major problems with this situation.First, industrial safety risks are high. Including global disasters such as COVID-19 and supply disruption risks caused by geopolitics and trade frictions.Second, it cannot meet the needs of innovative development of my country's automobile industry.At present, my country's automobile industry has entered a stage of innovative development. The relationship between complete automobiles, parts and automobile chips is no longer the simple procurement and supply relationship before, but a collaborative relationship. Therefore, the innovative development of China's automobile industry requires a strong automobile chip industry that is nearby, in the same region.

Fourth, China’s current situation of insufficient automotive chip design and production capacity is fully capable of changing。First, automotive chips do not require the most high-end technology. Automotive chips are mostly in the 28-40 nanometer class. The main difficulties lie in the harsh conditions of chip use, high requirements for product weather resistance, durability, reliability, consistency, high cost requirements, and functional safety requirements. There are no high thresholds for design capabilities, production conditions, and manufacturing equipment. At present, our country mainly lacks the ecology for automotive chip design, production, and application. Given time, we can do all of this.Second, China’s automobile market is huge.Our country is currently the world's largest automobile production and sales country, with production accounting for about 1/3 of the world, and may grow to 1/2 in the future. In addition to the high technical threshold, another important reason why key automotive materials, core components, and high-end equipment are produced in a few countries and regions and supplied to the world is that the market size of the automotive industry in each country is not large enough.Only China is different. We have a large enough market to support the development of key materials, core components and high-end equipment such as automotive chips.

There is one last sentence,The author prefers to call automotive chips a "short board" in the development of China's automotive industry, rather than a "stuck" component. Using the latter statement will easily politicize things and is not conducive to our development.
