To this end, the electric vehicle market will grow at an annual rate of approximately 30% from 2020 to 2025, and the value contribution per vehicle will be five times that of internal combustion engine vehicles in 2018.

Will 800V inverters explode?

Porsche, Audi, General Motors, and Maserati are all making plans

According to reports, compared with the traditional 400V system, the 800V inverter can greatly shorten the charging time of the battery, charging the battery to 80% in less than 20 minutes. Hyundai and Porsche have also cited similar data.
Andreas Wolf believes that the 800V system has great growth potential, "So far, most electric vehicle drives have used 400V systems, and only a few have 800V special architectures."
According to reports, the 800V system is mainly installed on some high-end models, such asPorsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GTwait. General Motors and electric truck startup Rivian say they will be able to upgrade their systems to higher voltages. Maserati also said last year that future pure electric vehicles will use an 800V architecture.
Bert Hellwig, head of electric drive system development at ZF, believes that "800V architecture will establish itself in future premium cars or sports electric vehicles, while 400V architecture will remain the standard in the high-volume market." The company is now preparing to start series production of 800V systems this year.
According to Hellwig, these 800V orders are mainly for supply to a Chinese car company and a European sports car manufacturer.
Some experts speculate that more manufacturers will gradually switch to the 800V architecture. Tesla has always been known for its pursuit of high efficiency, so it will also adopt it.
Currently, in addition to Vitesco and ZF, other suppliers supporting 800V technology include Hitachi and BorgWarner. Among them, BorgWarner, ZF and Delphi all use Cree's solutions.
As early as September 2019, Delphi's 800V silicon carbide inverter has been successfully mass-produced; Bosch Group announced that it will start producing a new generation of energy-saving chips using silicon carbide materials in Germany in 2021; BorgWarner also launched a new car charger using silicon carbide technology.

Domestic semiconductor manufacturers including BYD, Jingjin Electric, China Resources Huajing Microelectronics, and Huahong Grace are actively deploying SiC power semiconductor devices.
